Imagine having a group of trusted individuals who act as your personal board of directors — advisors who guide, support, and challenge you in meaningful ways. Just like a company’s board, your personal board is there to offer wisdom and fresh perspectives, but for your life and goals.
Want to know how to build your own board? Here are my recommended steps you should follow.
Step 1. Self-Reflection
Understand your strengths, gaps, and aspirations. Know what you need from your board by assessing your current strengths, weaknesses, and goals.
Step 2. Create Your Board Positions
Create your board positions. Here are some examples:
- An Auntie: Honest yet loving feedback.
- A Fellow Parent: Trusted advice for raising kids.
- A Cheerleader: Celebrates your wins and lifts you up when you fall.
- A Sponsor: Advocates for you in key spaces.
- A Connector: Introduces you to valuable contacts.
- A Personal Role Model: Someone you strive to be like.
- A Spiritual Guide: A person to pray with or offer soulful support.
Step 3. Pick Your People
Look around for those who inspire you — mentors, peers, friends’ parents, career coaches, etc. Choose diverse individuals across different industries, backgrounds, and life stages to enrich your perspective.
Step 4. Give Back
Give back to your board.Maintain your board by investing time and effort. Celebrate their involvement in your wins — take them out, send thank-you notes, or give public recognition.
So, there you have it! Start crafting your personal board of directors today and watch your journey transform!
