The Value of a Small Business Owner Finding “Your People”

What ComicCon Taught Me About Community

Thirteen years ago, I took my then 12-year-old son to our very first ComicCon. I went thinking it would be just a fun outing for him, something he could geek out about and enjoy. What I didn’t expect was that I would walk away from that day with something much deeper than souvenirs and selfies with cosplayers. I walked away with a profound lesson on the power of community.

My son and I enjoyed ourselves so much that we went back the following year. And again, it didn’t disappoint. We met people who loved comic books and superheroes just as much as we did. We connected with artists and storytellers, laughed with strangers over obscure character references, and spent our day immersed in a space that didn’t require us to explain or shrink. We belonged.

That’s when it clicked: this is what it feels like to be around “your people.”

The Power of Community

As a professional meeting and event planner, I’ve attended countless conferences and experiences. But none of them quite mirrored the magic I felt at ComicCon, because it wasn’t just about the event. It was about who showed up. The shared interests; the unspoken understanding; and the freedom to be exactly who we are without judgment. That’s the power of community.

Finding Your People Changes Everything

When you find people who truly see you, your values, your quirks, and your dreams, it changes everything. You feel validated and you feel safe, but most of all, you feel energized. There’s no need to “shape shift” or perform because you simply get “to be.”

It’s a Survival Strategy

As entrepreneurs, we often work in silos. We carry so much on our shoulders, wearing multiple hats and pushing ourselves toward growth, sometimes at the cost of our well-being. That’s why finding your people is more than just a feel-good sentiment, it’s a survival strategy.

Nurture Your Connections

Whether it’s a membership community, a mastermind group, or a professional conference that gets you out from behind your screen and into a room full of kindred spirits, seek out connection. Carve out time to engage with others who understand your journey and want to walk alongside you. These connections can restore your creativity, elevate your confidence, and remind you that you’re not alone. Because you’re not.

So, if you’ve been feeling disconnected or unsure of where you fit in, this is your invitation to go find your people (or let them find you). When you do, you’ll realize you were never meant to do this alone. And maybe, just maybe, that’s the secret to building a business, and a life, that feels whole.
