When the “Word of the Year” Doesn’t Go as Planned

At the beginning of this year, I proudly declared my word for 2025 to be, “audacious.” And, I meant it. This was the year I intended to fully introduce the products and services I had been thoughtfully building for the last five years. I was ready to step forward and shine. But, by the third week of January, my business (and the broader landscape around me) shifted quickly. Instead of momentum, I found myself in a reactive cycle. Each new business opportunity seemed to be followed by a loss: a budget cut, low ticket sales, or even the ripple effects of an executive order. I worked harder than ever before in 2025, and generated far less revenue. If I’m honest, my word may have started as audacious, but it slowly gave way to something far less empowering: fear.  And this is the truth every creative entrepreneur needs to remember: Fear is a Terrible CEO.

Fear is a Terrible CEO

Fear trades vision and strategy for constant urgency. And, it quietly turns confident leaders into people-pleasers. My wake-up call came during a difficult phone conversation. That moment forced me to pause, look within, and start the process of leading differently. I don’t mean to sound like the “bionic women” (aging myself), but I had to “rebuild.” So, here’s what my “rebuilding phase” taught me to carry into 2026 as a CEO:
  • Protect your energy
  • Lead with clarity, not urgency
  • Choose strategy over survival mode
  • Make business decisions rooted in vision, not reaction
  • And, remember that hard seasons do not cancel out strong leadership

You Will Not Thrive as a Fearful CEO

I have new strategic plans in place now. And, these new strategic plans aren’t rushed, nor are they fear-based. They are grounded, intentional, and they are still audacious. They are also a little bit wiser about the road ahead.

Business Recalibration is Not Failure

So, as you close out this year, I invite you to reflect:  What “word” truly defined your 2025, and what did it teach you about how you want to lead next?

  • Reflection is not weakness.
  • Recalibration is not failure.
  • And, choosing courage again, after a year of disappointment, is leadership at its highest level.
Here’s to entering the new year with clearer vision, steadier footing, and leadership skills rooted in intention. Not fear.
