5 Things Entrepreneurs Ought To Give Up for Lent

We often hear about people giving up sweets or TV or (gasp) coffee for Lent. The sacrifice is important, but lent is also a time of self reflection. This time of year, I find myself asking, “What can I do to live a better life or better yet, what can I do to make this world a better place?”

Because entrepreneurship is such a large portion of my life, I also try to make changes in my business life that I can work on during Lent and beyond. Truth be told, some of these items have been on my list for more than one Lenten season. I’m a work in progress . . .

1. Comparison. If you spend your time growing the unique talents you have been given, you won’t have time to worry about anyone else.

2. Impatience. Behind every “overnight success,” there is an entrepreneur who put in 10,000 hours, built networks, and remained faithful.

3. The Need to Be Perfect. The need to be perfect can be an entrepreneur’s kryptonite. Launches are delayed and products are never sold. Instead of hiding the gifts that the Creator gave you, launch your product and make improvements to your work as you go.

4. Pride. No matter how many years you have been in the business, every day is a new opportunity to learn something new. Every now and then, your lesson may come from someone less experienced than you — Pay attention.

5. Fear of Failure. For entrepreneurs, some failure is inevitable. Don’t let the fear of failure control you. Instead, use your failures as lessons and make them the stepping stones to your success.
