Friendly advice for my business friends: Remember to showcase your portfolio on your web site and blog. Social media shouldn’t be the only place where your market finds your work. And, here’s why . . .
Not too long ago, I sat down with a production company that my lead wedding planner and I were considering for an upcoming luxury wedding. Everything was going smoothly until they handed me their brochure. As I flipped through the pages, I began to recognize several of the images. So, what’s was the challenge here? The work wasn’t theirs.
I knew the photos belonged to another production company. I had seen them featured on that company’s website, Instagram, and shared by their vendor partners. And believe me when I say that these weren’t similar images. They were the exact same photos. And just like that, my confidence in that production company evaporated.
Now, this isn’t a post about calling someone out. It’s a gentle reminder to all of us (especially those of us who serve discerning clients in the luxury wedding and event industry) that how we present ourselves matters. Authenticity isn’t just a virtue, it’s your power play. So, show up for your vision and shine boldly. Because no one can celebrate your greatness like you can.
Here are three key takeaways for wedding creatives and luxury event pros:
1. Showcase your real work often and everywhere.
Your website and blog are not just marketing tools, they are your digital storefront. They are proof of the magic you create. Update them regularly with your original work. This is your professional portfolio, and it should speak for you when you’re not in the room.
2. Don’t be afraid to repeat yourself.
Many creative entrepreneurs worry they’re posting too much of the same work on social media. Let me reassure you: you’re not. “Uncle Algorithm” isn’t showing all of your content to everyone. Repetition helps new clients discover you and reminds past clients of your value.
3. Advocate for credit gracefully but firmly.
When vendor partners or clients post your work, kindly ask that they tag you or mention your business. If they forget, follow up. You deserve to be recognized for your contribution to the final product. In a saturated market, integrity, visibility, and collaboration set you apart. And in the luxury space, your reputation is your currency. You’ve worked hard to build your brand. Don’t let someone else’s shortcuts cast doubt on your brilliance.
