There’s a moment that happens often in our industry: a couple sits across from us, eyes shining and hearts racing, as they hand over their Pinterest board containing their dreamy pins. And maybe, just maybe, you’ve seen every single one of those pins a hundred times before. But in that moment, what you’re holding is not just a collection of trends. You’re holding someone’s hopes, dreams, and efforts to imagine the most meaningful day of their lives.
In my recent YouTube video, I shared some valuable tips you can use to guide couples toward fresh wedding designs without criticizing their ideas or choices. We, as wedding and event professionals, need to respond with care and strategy when we’re faced with recycled trends.
Honor the Vision, Then Gently Guide
When a couple brings inspiration, they’re inviting us into their imagination. And our job isn’t to shut it down; it’s to expand it. Rather than saying, “This has been done so many times,” try:
“I love that you’re drawn to romantic details. Let’s make that even more personal.”
“What if we took the essence of this, and gave it a fresh spin that feels more like you?”
You’re not correcting them. You’re co-creating with them.
How to Elevate Common Trends
Reimagine color palettes. If everyone is using soft pinks, infuse deeper tones, metallics, or unexpected accents that reflect the couple’s personality or story.
Customize the structure. That geometric arch? Use it—but fabricate it with materials or florals that haven’t been overdone.
Infuse cultural or personal meaning. Ask what matters to the couple and weave that meaning into the design. It could be the couple’s heritage, mementos from their travel, or their love story details.
Change the context. Take a common element and place it in an uncommon setting. Think: flower clouds suspended above a dance floor, or ceremony structures built in the round.
The Soulful Side of Design
As wedding designers and planners, we are artists and interpreters. We translate our clients’ ideas into experiences that move people.
The real magic happens when we:
Validate their inspiration without diminishing it
Use our creative gifts to expand and elevate what they love
Build trust so they know we’re on their team, not critiquing their taste
And when we get it right, the result isn’t just beautiful, it’s meaningful.
